Mechanical engineering is one of the largest, broadest, and oldest engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineering emerged as a field during the industrial revolution in Europe in the 18th century; however its development can be traced back in several thousand years around the world. During the 19th century as a result of the development in the field of physics the mechanical engineering science emerged. The advancement in technologies and a host of others factors has led to development and refinement of the skills, intuition and creative ability of mechanical engineering which have lot of  impact on lives in the 21st century. Engineering in Kenya has more articles.

Mechanical engineering is a discipline of engineering that applies the principle of physics energy, materials, and mechanics to design, analysis, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical system that create the processes and systems that drive technology and industry. It is the branch of engineering that involves the production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design production and operation of machines and tools .Mechanics, energy and heat, mathematics, engineering sciences, design and manufacturing form the foundation of mechanical engineering.

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines. The engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics thermodynamics, material science and structural analysis. Along other tools like computer aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipments and machinery including the core engineering principle that mechanical engineering use.

The mechanical engineering field is notable for emphasizing versatility and versatility is a decided asset in that is undergoing constant economic, political, industrial, and social change. A mechanical engineering education is an excellent foundation for work in other fields. Some mechanical engineers work on medical problems, such as the mechanics of bones and joints, or the fluid dynamics of the circulatory system. Mechanical engineers deal with economic issues, from the cost of a single component, to the economic impact of a manufacturing plant while other mechanical engineers’ can be found in sales engineering management, and corporate management. Mechanical engineers are educated and positioned, not only to adapt, but to define and direct change in the mechanical engineering field.

Mechanical engineering

The diversity of the field of mechanical engineering is represented in the following areas of involvement such as basic engineering which concerns applied mechanics, fluid engineering, bioengineering, environment conservation, systems and design, materials engineering energy resources among others. A bachelor’s degree in engineering is required for almost all entry level into engineering jobs. While mechanical engineering programs may vary in specific content and detail, they are linked by a common educational philosophy.

The programs provide a broad based education with a concentration on fundamentals and basic laws as the major tools required for the professional practice of mechanical engineering. Graduates are expected to have the ability to work professionally, as individuals and in teams, in both the thermal and mechanical systems areas, including the design, manufacture and control of such systems. Moreover, they are expected to understand the ethical, legal, and societal implications of their work in relation to the mechanical engineering field.

Mathematics is a fundamental language of the engineering program. Students also gain extensive integrated laboratory, computer and design experiences that emphasize synthesis, computer applications and problem solving. Communications, teamwork and practical hands on experience with various product design processes are also important elements of the mechanical engineering program. Internships, coop semesters and participation in Student Section activities are strongly encouraged as means to gain exposure to mechanical engineering field practice.

Career Path of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a general term that is used to describe it and the key characteristics of the profession are its breadth, flexibility, and individuality. The career paths of mechanical engineers are largely determined by individual choices, a decided advantage in a changing world. Basically if something moves or uses energy, a mechanical engineer was probably involved in its design or production therefore virtually every aspect of life is connected or touched by mechanical engineering.

One who aspire the mechanical engineering career may starts with being curious about how things work or how things are made and marvel at seeing ideas transformed into physical reality. They also find themselves stimulated by the process of trying to improve the way something works. Also enjoying being a part of a team that work together to accomplish something; or if are stimulated by the math, science and technology studies, even though, and perhaps because, they can be challenging have already started down the road toward becoming a mechanical engineer.

Some people choose mechanical engineering because they see it as the best way to put to use their interests in math, physics, and technology. For many, however, it all begins with a fascination for things that move such as cars, trains, planes, spacecraft, amusement park rides. And for others, family or friends in the mechanical engineering profession provide the initial encouragement. Virtually anything that can be imagined, designed, and built has a mechanical engineering aspect to it.

A mechanical engineering degree places graduates ahead in the race for quality employment. Statistics show that mechanical engineers earn lots of money! The mechanical engineering professional can, and should, aim high in their career aspirations. There is an underlying myth around the profession that the mechanical engineering course is very difficult in terms of studies and that a realm of engineers is in middle management which has led to a depreciation of the number of student enrolling into the degree of mechanical engineering. And, due to the declining number of mechanical engineering graduates entering the profession, there is an abundance of job opportunities in a variety of industries.

Advantages of Learning Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is specifically concerned with design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of just about anything that has moveable parts. Mechanical Engineering programs provide more than technical training; they teach the more sophisticated skills of analysis and problem solving that apply to most any type of engineering, manufacturing, business ventures, management, or even legal practice. They teach you how to learn, thought processes and approaches that will serve you throughout your life and career of mechanical engineering.

A career in mechanical engineering would suit a behind the scenes or in front of the camera type person.  High academic qualifications are the only pre-requisites along with a passion for learning and enthusiasm for making things happen. As a result, there are job opportunities for mechanical engineers in practically every field of work, transport, health, defense, manufacturing, entertainment, finance, publishing, building, design and research, to name but a few. From designing heart valves and artificial limbs, clockwork radios and dentists’ drills to building racing cars, jet engines or space modules are range of projects in mechanical engineering.
